WiseTech Global has announced the resignation of Richard White as executive chairman after personal controversy created \u201cunnecessary distraction\u201d, though he remains on the board.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, the Australian billionaire co-founder will be replaced as chair by Raelene Murphy, an independent director who joined the\u00a0logistics\u00a0software provider\u2019s board at the start of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr White claimed this was due to recent media reports of allegations of human trafficking<\/a> that he had denied \u201cstrenuously and unequivocally\u201d, distracting from the strength of the business.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cRecent personal media attention is creating an unnecessary distraction from the strength of WiseTech\u2019s business. At this time, the senior management team, Zubin [Appoo] and I, should be singularly focused on the execution of the company\u2019s growth strategy,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFurther, I am conscious that personal attacks on me in the media that are unconnected to the performance of the company nevertheless have the potential to encourage short-selling activity,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One industry source\u00a0told\u00a0The Loadstar <\/i>Mr White\u2019s departure from the chairman role \u201cdoesn\u2019t go far enough, as he\u2019s still got other titles\u201d. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s meaningful but I\u2019m not sure it really matters\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Indeed, Mr White will remain at Wisetech as executive director and continue as chief innovation officer.<\/p>\n

But the resignation has been welcomed by investors, however, with the AXS-listed company\u2019s shares spiking in early morning trading and currently at $37.37.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jackson Lee, an RBC Capital Markets analyst, said Mr White\u2019s move was \u201canother step in the right direction\u201d, but investors would want proof of improved governance before buying back in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe market will likely want to see ongoing evidence that the refreshed board, CEO, and chief innovation officer operate independently,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The incoming chair, Ms Murphy, said her\u00a0personal experience of working with Mr White had been \u201ctotally at odds with media reports\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI have found him to be an incredibly hardworking, focused, and committed founder who has built a leading global technology business with enormous potential to continue to grow stronger and thrive,\u201d she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, forwarders are\u00a0reviewing<\/a> \u2013 and\u00a0seeking\u00a0to mitigate \u2013\u00a0their dependence on\u00a0Wisetech\u2019s\u00a0Cargowise\u00a0platform.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
