TIACA\u2019s executive summit in Warsaw was fun; but better still, it was different \u2013 not a word always associated with air cargo conferences, admittedly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

People complain that air cargo\u00a0is cliquey, an\u00a0old boys\u2019 club\u00a0where the\u00a0same faces\u00a0say\u00a0much\u00a0the same things.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The reality is simpler \u2013 air cargo is tiny. After a few events, everybody knows everybody.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But what was striking at TIACA this week was how many people there were that nobody knew. And it wasn\u2019t just a geographical quirk \u2013 although of course there were a lot of people from central and eastern Europe, which made a nice change.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But there were other newcomers \u2013 and new ideas \u2013 everywhere: young people, women, start-ups; people who haven\u2019t spent the past 20 years arguing over airport capacity, or the interminably long road to digitisation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And\u00a0it would seem that much\u00a0of that change is\u00a0down to TIACA\u2019s\u00a0varied and interesting\u00a0awards\u00a0programmes, which have rewarded the industry with\u00a0fresh blood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some attendees were in their late teens and twenties, others half a century older, but also brimming with new ideas and a whole new lease of life, focused on ecommerce, electric aircraft, and new delivery models.\u00a0<\/p>\n

(Watching air cargo veterans Stan Wraight and Jacques Heeremans\u2019 video of the pair in flight on the new Beta electric aircraft, huge beams on their faces like kids at a sweet shop, was as pleasurable as hearing about young female-led start-ups in the business)\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0hard not to like an industry when you see people rediscovering why they fell in love with it in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The conference itself has also come a long way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For years, air cargo conferences have had a tendency to be dull: same-old, same-old. Digitisation, sustainability. A map of an airport showing it to be in the heart of its own catchment area; an SaaS provider bearing their wares. Many men.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While air cargo still has some way to go, Warsaw felt noticeably different. Women weren\u2019t just present on stage; they were moderating, leading discussions, and speaking as commercial and operational decision-makers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The percentage of female speakers has doubled since\u00a0TIACA\u2019s\u00a02024\u00a0event\u00a0\u2013 and this week was above 30%, a number to be very much congratulated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But not only were there more women,\u00a0there\u00a0was\u00a0also\u00a0more\u00a0personality. A keynote speaker from outside the industry brought fresh thinking. A fireside chat with United Cargo\u2019s Jan Krems\u00a0was exactly that, a look at his career.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And even the networking is evolving. (Much gratitude to Port Polska and LOT Cargo for two beautiful evenings in stunning settings).<\/p>\n

The Miami ACF later this year will feature not just golf \u2013 thank God \u2013 but yoga and pickleball too. (No doubt somewhere, an air cargo executive is currently googling \u201cpickleball\u201d).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Much\u00a0of this change can\u00a0largely\u00a0be\u00a0traced back to one person.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Glyn Hughes has spent the past several years dragging TIACA into the modern era. Membership has grown; the association feels more relevant. It has become more willing to challenge itself, and more willing to welcome people who weren\u2019t already part of the furniture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Replacing him will not be easy. We understand there were around 30 applicants for the role and an announcement is expected soon. Mr Hughes has offered to stay around and help \u2013 if his successor wants it \u2013 and why wouldn\u2019t they? The transformation isn\u2019t quite finished. In many ways, the hard work of the past years is only just becoming visible.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The next secretary general will inherit an\u00a0organisation\u00a0with momentum, energy and,\u00a0perhaps most\u00a0importantly, optimism.\u00a0So, as they say in politics, a\u00a0continuity\u00a0candidate would make a lot of sense.\u00a0The foundations have been laid; the shoots are appearing.\u00a0Now is\u00a0probably not\u00a0the time to start digging everything up again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Air cargo spends a lot of time talking about innovation.\u00a0In Warsaw, for once, it actually felt like you could see it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Long may it\u00a0last, and\u00a0well done TIACA.\u00a0<\/p>\n
