{"id":6985,"date":"2026-10-13T15:13:49","date_gmt":"2026-10-13T12:13:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mikhailinvest.com\/bangladesh-backs-mongla-expansion-as-workers-protest-dp-world-deal\/"},"modified":"2026-10-13T15:13:49","modified_gmt":"2026-10-13T12:13:49","slug":"bangladesh-backs-mongla-expansion-as-workers-protest-dp-world-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikhailinvest.com\/ru\/bangladesh-backs-mongla-expansion-as-workers-protest-dp-world-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh backs Mongla expansion as workers protest DP World deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"hero\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theloadstar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/5dafdb4e2f3f8959bb6bd72468ade015-680x0-c-default.jpg\" alt=\"dreamstime_xs_292925488 (1)\" \/>\n<p>Chittagong port \u00a9 Asmtamanna |<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<time datetime=\"2026-10-13\">13 October 2026<\/time><\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh has signed a $336m loan agreement with China to expand and modernise Mongla port, as workers at the country\u2019s main container gateway of Chittagong threaten an indefinite hunger strike over a deal handing a major terminal to DP World.<\/p>\n<p>Signed in Dhaka on Sunday, the loan will fund the construction of two container jetties, as well as a cargo and delivery yard, at Mongla, alongside the purchase of modern port equipment, with expectations of an increase in annual capacity of 394,000 teu.<\/p>\n<p>Dhaka-based garment exporter Rafayet Ullah said construction of the Padma Bridge would make Mongla a genuine alternative to Chittagong, telling <em>The Loadstar:<\/em> \u201cThe increased number of jetties and modern equipment means the port will be able to facilitate significant volumes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The China-backed expansion comes as authorities in Bangladesh face opposition from port workers over a decision to award DP World a 15-year concession to operate Chittagong\u2019s largest container terminal, the New-mooring Container Terminal (NCT).<\/p>\n<p>Signed on 8 October, extending the concession, the agreement has seen workers and members of left-wing political parties stage mass \u201csymbolic\u201d hunger strikes outside the port as they demanded the deal\u2019s cancellation. And now they plan more drastic action.<\/p>\n<p>Humayun Kabir, coordinator of the Port Protection Sangram Parishad, said that, with government authorities refusing to discuss the deal, workers were \u201cgiving the government another bout of time.
