{"id":4182,"date":"2026-07-15T14:36:40","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T11:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mikhailinvest.com\/dont-jump-on-early-fixed-rate-ocean-contract-offers-shippers-advised\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T14:36:40","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T11:36:40","slug":"dont-jump-on-early-fixed-rate-ocean-contract-offers-shippers-advised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikhailinvest.com\/ru\/dont-jump-on-early-fixed-rate-ocean-contract-offers-shippers-advised\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Don\u2019t jump on early fixed-rate ocean contract offers\u2019, shippers advised"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"hero\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theloadstar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/09a34bcf6fdb8e9773611e4557888945-680x0-c-default.jpg\" alt=\"money ship in water\" \/>\n<p>Photo: \u00a9 Alexkalina<br \/>\n| Dreamstime.com<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<time datetime=\"2026-07-15\">15 July 2026<\/time><\/p>\n<p>Shippers should resist the temptation to lock themselves into annual ocean freight contracts too early, according to\u00a0Flexport, as the current rate spike could be\u00a0nearing its peak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During a market webinar, the digital forwarder said importers should avoid committing to the first contract offers by carriers, arguing that seasonal demand will ease from mid-August, and pricing should follow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect we are now on top of the mountain, so we will see some stabilisation coming until probably mid-August,\u201d said Guillaume Caill, head of ocean EMEA at Flexport.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added that from mid-August until China\u2019s Golden Week in early October, Flexport anticipates that the \u201cusual seasonality\u201d will trigger a rate decline. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see a declining wave in terms of price developments, and we do hope that by September we will also not have any space issues.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He explained that stronger-than-expected demand, early Christmas restocking and longer voyage times around the Cape of Good Hope had kept capacity tight through June and July, but the space constraints should ease by September.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not jump on the first fixed rate that comes to you,\u201d advised Mr Caill. \u201cThere will be better opportunities coming up in September, normally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he warned that \u201ca fixed contract is never totally fixed\u201d, and recommended a mix of fixed, floating, and index-linked agreements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, BCO consortium ShiftX argued that today\u2019s geopolitical volatility strengthened the case for long-term carrier contracts, rather than waiting for the spot market to soften.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while Flexport recommended shippers to delay commitments until seasonal conditions improved, ShiftX argued that predictability now carried more value than trying to time the market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ShiftX UK MD Keith Gaskin explained that the past five years had demonstrated that supply chain disruption had become structural, rather than cyclical, adding:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s not a question of <em>if<\/em> there\u2019s going to be another global crisis affecting shipping; it\u2019s <em>when<\/em>,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ShiftX, which pools members\u2019 container volumes to negotiate annual contracts with six major carriers, said long-term agreements had protected customers from the sharp increases seen on the spot market since the Middle East crisis escalated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gaskin acknowledged rates were likely to soften towards late August and September, but warned any decline could prove short-lived, with Golden Week, Chinese New Year, and continued geopolitical instability all likely to inject fresh volatility into the market.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Flexport also cautioned that the geopolitical picture remained highly uncertain. It said \u201ctoday, there is no safe passage in Hormuz\u201d, while Red Sea transits remained well below pre-crisis levels, despite a small number of carriers cautiously returning services.
